about the program

visual communications is a diverse profession which encompasses print and multimedia jobs in corporate communication, editorial design, advertising, package design and environmental graphics.

the visual communications program is designed to prepare students for careers in designing and developing print and multimedia end products, produced to client specifications and industry standards.

the program is flexible and expandable, allowing us to react to industry demands. We understand that we are training artists who know how to use computers—not techno-geeks who dabble with pre-made clip art or photography. we also know that our designers need to command a high level of verbal and visual business communication skills.

in terms of vocation, our graduates have a broad base of creative, technical, aesthetic and business knowledge. they are ready to enter the field of visual communications design, or transfer to four-year college programs.

the program mirrors the creativity and complexity
found in industry.

  • students take required core classes in a recommended sequence that develops and then enhances technical and visual communication skills
  • students are encouraged to develop artistic skills and techniques that lead to a personal "style" and "visual voice"
  • as they progress, students create individual projects as well as client-based production work and requirements
  • often working in small teams, students learn to develop effective communication and business strategies while learning to design client-defined, industry-standard output geared to a diverse, international audience
  • students obtaining a certificate are required to learn through internships and entrepeneurial projects. They are mentored on campus and in the community
  • whether students transfer to 4-year college or enter a print and/or multimedia profession, graduation portfolios reflect requirements demanded by upper-level schools and employers in every field of visual communication.
